PPC version questions

Asked by Uta

I have a dual boot iBook G4 and running Dapper. I followed the terminal commands:
wget http://robotgeek.org/eu/easyubuntu-3.0-beta.tar.gz
tar -zxf easyubuntu-3.0-beta.tar.gz
cd easyubuntu
sudo python easyubuntu.py

The install went smoothly, I had selected all the multimedia plugins, archive, etc... I did a restart and no plugins were installed. The RealPlayer is in my system but when I try to add the app it says, wrong architecture. Are there limitations for the PPC version? Also can I uninstall or put my system back the way it was before Easy Ubuntu? Thank you!

Can you try a nightly download or direct from SVN, I'm not sure how up
to date that link is kept.
Re Realplayer, it should not have installed in the first place.

Thank you for your response. After doing a little research, to install the Flash plugin or the RealPlayer plugin via Easy Ubuntu for PPC would be useless for they don't work for PPC. My question is how to uninstall whatever Easy Ubuntu did install on my system. Thanks!

I'd have to admit, uninstalling software correctly in Linux is bizarrely difficult. To help with that, I personally use a little gem called "debfoster". Just run it as root (with sudo in ubuntu), and it will ask you *for each package* if you want to keep it or not. This information is then stored in /var/lib/debfoster/keepers, which you can edit by hand without a problem (just rerun debfoster afterwards).
Everytime you want to clean up the zillion packages you have installed, just rerun debfoster to help you sort it all out :)

*BEWARE* though, not to uninstall something which should not be. Make sure to keep at least the following :

grub
linux-686
linux-headers-686
ubuntu-base
ubuntu-desktop

otherwise you'll end up with a broken system.

you can do full system cleanups as above, or just open synaptic and
search for the packages you installed (if you know what they are)

Thank you for your tips on cleanup. May I ask why it says Easy Ubuntu is for PPC when it can't actually load useable plugins? It's a bit confusing. IT worked super on my Dell but zero on my iBook running Ubuntu.

It says its for PPC because it can install over half its software on
PPC. try the latest archive, it should hide anything that isnt installable.

I just thought I'd add that Realplayer does indeed install and work on PPC with Ubuntu - I have it working on my TiBook G4/800 DVI.

That's terrific news. Would you care to share the details of your install? I am assuming you are referring to video streaming with Real Player? I have audio streaming and was very much trying to add video streaming. Can you tell me what plugin(s), where you downloaded the plugin from, version and install method. Thank you for this confirmation.
