Multiple incremental chains on a full backup?

Asked by Ville Walveranta

As far as I can tell, it is not currently possible to have more than one incremental chain on a full backup. If so, it would be a reasonable feature request. This originated from someone's question on ServerFault (https://serverfault.com/questions/891638/duplicity-is-it-possible-to-create-each-increment-based-on-last-full-and-not-la). The idea being that for simplicity of a backup (and probably more so, restore) there would be a full backup, let's say twice monthly. Between the full backups, there would be just individual, stand-alone incremental files (such as one per day), which would increase in size day by day as each incremental would include all changes since the last full, not since the previous incremental. To restore, only the last full + one incremental would be needed.

It was my question on serverfault.
It would be great to have such functionality.

This mode is normally called differential backup. You could emulate it by having a script move the daily incremental to a subdirectory after the backup is done. That way, duplicity would start each daily with a new incremental, all based on the full backup. I have plans to add differential to the mix, but it's way down the road.
