When will we be able to specify icons for launchers?

Asked by maxsideburn

Seriously, this is a feature that pretty much absolutely necessary for a dock to have. WHEN will we be able to manually specify icons for our dock launchers? I'm sure I'm not the only one who's tired of looking at ugly icons. Likewise I'm sure lots of folks would like to be able to use a custom icon set. Surely this cannot be that difficult of a feature to include. So PLEASE guys, this is the only feature that keeps Docky from absolutely destroying all of the competition.

If you want to change the icon for a launcher, edit the .desktop file. Docky follows the freedesktop.org desktop entry spec. Please see this link: http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ar01s05.html for information on keys in the .desktop files.

@ Chris S. would be better if we had an option on Docky to change the icons because this way you present it can be a bit complicated for "those who have less experience" and would also be excellent Docky have this option, since the what makes a great application are its small details.

@Samuel1988 Indeed.

The default behaviour of Docky is okay, but we should be able to edit the icons from the frontend.

It's not within Docky's scope to fix your .desktop files. There are graphical ways to edit desktop files already, and we don't need to reinvent the wheel. If you want a graphical way to change the icon for an application, right click on the menu bar (on gnome-panel) and select "Edit Menus", or launch 'alacarte' from a terminal. From here you can see all of your installed applications, and selecting one then clicking on "Properties" will allow you to change the name, description or icon.

@ Chris S. Ah, I see your point. However Docky should help to find those solutions IMO. It's not very easy to that I should modify the .desktop file (which leads to a desktop-wide change) to change the icons in Docky. A lot of other docks used a completely different approach. (That wasn't better at all; just different, so a user coming from another dock will be confused about this - like me.)

Why can't Docky pull the icon from the .desktop file AND have the ability to right click an icon and select "Custom Icon", where the user can select a custom png??

In my opinion this is the ONLY thing that keeps Docky from being the absolute un-disputed king of docks.

It is absurd to have to edit a system file to change an icon for a dock entry when nearly every other dock in the world allows you to simply specify a custom png file for the dock icon. I'm sorry, but I can't see it being a really difficult thing to add in either.

Can you help with this problem?
