how to get the appearances tab to enable docky

ok I have enabled the repos, and installed do - when i right click the icon in the top bar and select preferences i only have as options:
general
keyboard
and plugins
there is no option for appearances
What am i doing wrong - how do I see the appearances tab?
I am running ubuntu 8.04 do version 0.6.1.0
