New revision planned for Custom Dell UI?

Asked by Luca Ferretti

Here are any official plan to "upgrade" the Custom Dell UI to a more recent ubuntu version, or we'll just have only "updates" against 8.04?

In fact ther was a lot of interesting upgrades on free software this year, such as the full move from GnomeVFS to GIO in GNOME Desktop (plus, of course, all enhancements from release 2.22 to 2.26), the availabilty of NetworkManager 0.7 (that provides better support to "non standard" networks such as HDSPA and similar), the availability of OpenOffice.org 3.0, the new Bluez stack (while there was a lot of issues in 8.10 due this) and so on.

Of course I could use Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix (when it will available), but I like to know if Dell is planning to upgrade its own release (I like to have an "official" product for my Dell Mini, ensuring that everithing works fine) and, in case, how it will be distributed.

Thanks.

I believe Dell, or at least hope, that Dell will provide an update to 9.04. They should provide updates to "LTS" releases of Ubuntu. This may be covered in your service agreement with Dell; however, I am not sure.

I am sorry I can not provide more accurate information. It is really up to Dell and is covered under their service-level agreement. I agree with you on your points. This is why I believe Dell is providing coverage for the 8.04 edition, as it is the LTS version. They may very well do the same for the next LTS release.

I will check into it further; however, we may just have to "wait and see."

Network-Manager version 0.7 has been ported yesterday to the dell mini. I think it's a big usability improvement.

NM 0.7??? It is not listed in my updates (using default source list). Maybe from an "extra" repository?

PS I'm not closing this question as answered waiting for more info direclty from canonical or dell. However, thanks for your replies.

Luca,

I am running the proposed repository;

https://lists.launchpad.net/oem-community-qa/msg00002.html

In it there is a new version of the update manager. This new version brings a new software repository panel, with a new update repo. The new Network-manager resides in that new repo.

More indications of Jaunty coming soon are from the new repositories that have been pushed in the dell-mini archive:
