sound was working fine on ubuntu 8.04, but stopped working when i rebooted

my dell mini just came with Linux Ubuntu 8.04 today .. when it first started up my sound was working fine, now my sound isn't working at all, but it does work when i plug the ear phones in. can someone help me please?

If you hear something using your ear phones, this indicates that there is no problem with your sound card / ALSA driver.
Are you sure that you did not mute the pc speakers by accident? Open the Volume Applet (double-click on the loud speaker symbol on your panel) and check the settings for "PC speaker".
If you don't have a the Volume Applet in your panel you can add it by right-clicking on the panel and select "Add to Panel". In the window which opens scroll down and select "Volume Control" and click on the "Add" button.
