v13.4 available in the ppa?

Asked by Jonathon Hodges

Hi Michael,
I'm very impressed with how easy Déjà Dup is to use, I've been trying out the v10 and v11 versions and would like to try v13.4. Will you be making that the latest version in the development ppa soon? I started to build it myself but there were a lot of dependencies that I couldn't satisfy.

I'm currently building a set up that will allow me to do a simple local backup (to a USB hard drive) and then somehow sync that to a remote location (which in this case is a low spec Ubuntu server with another USB hard drive) via SSH. I'm hopeful that Déjà Dup is a good choice for my high-level user tool suitable for a wide range of user abilities.

Would you consider adding an option for remotely synchronising with a local backup, or should I just make a mirror of my local Déjà Dup archive using something like rsync and a cron job? I'm still debating with my self just how silly this sounds. I mean, would this be at all useful for the majority of users? You already have the option for an S3 backup, do you think it would be handy to offer a local backup at the same time? I imagine having a local backup is for day to day mishaps like deleting files by mistake but remote backup is more for recovery following a disaster.

I'd be interested to hear what you think of the idea and if you think I'm approaching it in a sensible way.

Thank you for your time on Déjà Dup though, it's a really great application.

Kind regards,
Jonathon

Hi, Jonathan! Good questions.

Regarding 13.4 in the PPA, I intended to do this, but it slipped. I will get on it this week. They will appear here: https://launchpad.net/~deja-dup-team/+archive/testing

Regarding backing up to a USB drive, you should like the better support for removable drives in 13.x.

I *am* interested in the feature of a 'dual' backup. Bug 324631 asks for support for 'profiles' to do that. I've been focusing on other things, however. I haven't decided how it would look in the UI. I fear losing the simplistic interface that Deja Dup currently has.

For now, I recommend you do the backup locally and rsync it if you are comfortable with creating that setup (which it sounds like you are).

For a less technical user that is not willing to workaround Deja Dup's missing features and is thus only going to be backing up to one location, I would recommend just directly backing up to a remote location, for the extra security an off-site backup provides.

Hi Michael,
That's great news, I'll carry on testing with 11 and pick up 13 from the ppa when you have a chance to do it.

In the meantime I'll get reading about rsync an if I can think of a neat way to change the UI, I'll post a mockup incase that gives you any ideas.

Thanks for the speedy response too!

Jonathon
