How to: Restore /home to fresh install?

Asked by Ned Burgher

[sorry if this was answered elsewhere... It feels a bit too obvious but, I couldn't find the answer here or around duplicity.]

Love the simplicity of Déjà Dup. But... I need to know how to "restore" a back-up to a /fresh/ install. The reason I ask is that this would be the best way for me to move from the ext3-based U9.04 to the ext4-based U9.10. Heck, this seems to be the best way to restore in case of system failure(!)...

I imagine I'd take the steps below but what I don't understand is, since this is pgp-encrypted, will I have to do anything other than re-enter the passphrase when prompted by the (new) Déjà Dup app on this fresh OS install? Steps to restore:

0) Back up /home to server (i.e. FreeNAS 0.7)
1) Fresh-install 9.10
2) Install Déjà Dup
3) Select "restore"
4) Enter passphrase, click OK, sit back & relax.

Do I have that right? Oh, and a bonus question: Do you post change logs somewhere?

Thank you for this project.

Yup! That's the sequence. When restoring, choose the 'restore to same location' option. You can even change usernames and deja-dup will figure it out. Just be prepared to have some temporary fresh-install data you may have overwritten.

In truth, if it's a one-time backup, you might as well just copy the data over and copy it back without Deja Dup. But if you want to use this opportunity to kick-start a more regular backup regime, then go for it!

As for changelogs, yeah: https://launchpad.net/deja-dup/11/11.0 and expand the changelog section. Or read the NEWS file in the package.
