Does SSH support now require Nautilus?

Asked by Paul Doe

In Version 7.4 (in the Ubuntu/jaunty repository), Deja-Dup handled SSH server setup with a prominent "SSH" option in the "Backup location" pulldown menu in the preferences window.

Version 10.1 (current release) no longer has this option. Instead, the yelp documentation states that a "Connect to Server..." option should be available after selecting "Other..." from the same pulldown. However, I do not see such a "Connect to Server..." option.

I use Thunar, not Nautilus. Could that be the reason that the option seems to be missing? If so, is there a way to set up an SSH server connection without Nautilus?

Thanks very much for your help.

Yes, the button doesn't show up if nautilus-connect-share is not installed (pressing the button runs it). So it does depend on nautilus in that sense.

If you mount the SSH server via Thunar (if Thunar uses gvfs these days -- I know there is/was a port in progress/done), it is selectable via the dropdown. The 'connect to server...' button is merely a way to mount a location.

If Thunar isn't yet gvfs-enabled (i.e. it can't mount remote gvfs shares), then there is a workaround -- set the backup location via gconf.

You can open gconf-editor and navigate to /apps/deja-dup. Set 'backend' to 'file' and and 'file/path' to 'ssh://<email address hidden>/path'.

Deja Dup will then mount the location itself.

Thanks for answering my question, Michael (and so quickly!).

I couldn't find anything concrete about gvfs support in Thunar at present, though at least one student seems to be working on it. However, I did find a separate app called Gigolo for mounting gvfs shares, which may be helpful.

Cheers,
Paul
