Deja Dup (Backups) "Giving up after 5 attempts. Error: Error splicing file: Input/output error"

Asked by Peter Whitlock

Run Backups upon start up. Last 2 days, Backups has scanned & backed up files. But ends with "Giving up after 5 attempts. Error: Error splicing file: Input/output error".

What is this error?
How does this affect my backups?
Is there a fix?

Thank you

3rd day: Backups ran normally. Did not result in error message. Will continue to monitor.

What is the storage location you're using? An external drive?

That message sounds like a filesystem-level issue, like a corrupted file or something. That's a little worrying.

For example, here's an old forum post I found when searching for the error: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/error-splicing-file-input-output-error-cannot-copy-files/69230/2

Thanks for the link Micheal.
I am using an external drive which I checked for disk errors. Fortunately none.
I had moved the external drive to clean that part of the shelf it is on. I must have 'slightly' loosened the cable.
In checking the connections I pushed it solidly back in. And have had no problems.
I was able to replicate the problem by just nudging the cable loose - it is very sensitive.
Shall be very careful next time I clean my shelf.
