how much more space does encrypting data take

Asked by poikiloid

how much more space does encrypting data take? i'm trying to backup ~10GB of data. How much space will this end up taking on the destination? Double? Triple? If encryption does significantly increase backup size, it would be good to say so below the option to encrypt in preferences.

I got a 3% increase in disk use when backing up jpeg images.

Since compression is used for the backups, it depends on what type of files you are backing up. Text files will typically take less space to backup, but already compressed files, like images and audio will take more space than the original.

If you choose to schedule backups using Deja Dup, only the changes in your files will be recorded.
This allows you to restore files from backups made at different dates while using a minimum of disk space.
