Can not display the contents of the backup media after deleting the backup

Asked by Melissa Mathy

Hello,
I am French, please excuse my bad English.

I used Déjà Dup for the first time yesterday.
I asked for a backup with password.
I first tried it on a Mint 20.2 virtual machine and I made the backup on a 4Tb external disk.
When I saw that the restore was working, I put the files in the recycle garbage can (from the VM) which I then emptied.

Since then, I can't mount the disk on the VM :

Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_PDM_NO_USB_PORTS). Error code : NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Making up : ConsoleWrap Interface : IConseil {872da645...}

And I have a lot of difficulties to mount it and display its content from my hard installed Linux system.

From the latter, I can no longer mount it with a double-click on the device, only right-click Mount still works.

Then the following error message appears:

Sorry, you can not view all the contents of "MAXTOR": Error when obtaining the file information "/media/mia/maxtor/duplicity-full-signatures.202123T095059z.sigtar.gz": input error / exit

And the content of the disk is not displayed:

I have to go through the tree from File System and then go down to media/mia/Maxtor from the right pane of the browser to be able to open its content.

The files deleted from the VM are still there!

I deleted them again but this time I moved them on a key in case they would be necessary for the repair of the external disk.

What do I have to do to get this disk back in good condition?
I can't copy its content elsewhere, there are 3 To of data, and I don't have any other media of this size.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I can understand just fine! I think... :)

So to be clear, this is what it sounds like happened:
- You used Deja Dup in a VM to back up some files inside that VM onto an external disk.
- Now that external disk is difficult for everything to read.
- Specifically, you get an error for duplicity-full-signatures.202123T095059z.sigtar.gz

It sounds like the filesystem of the external drive got corrupted somehow.

Can you open "Disques", plug in the external drive, then select it. There should be an icon with some gears on it that opens a menu with a bunch of options. It will look like: https://ibb.co/7j9dPvS

If you choose the Verify or the Repair options, do they find anything wrong with the disk?

Thank you for your quick answer.

I ran a file system check, the answer is that the file system is healthy.

But there was a message that the check may take some time depending on the amount of data, there is about 3To, but it only took a second.
It doesn't seem abnormal to me.
As for repairing the file system, a warning window warns that this may cause data loss.
So I don't dare to do that.

There is also a small 50 Go Ext4 partition on this external drive that I had created for system backups with Timeshift.
The verification takes longer...

Can you move /media/mia/maxtor/duplicity-full-signatures.202123T095059z.sigtar.gz somewhere else? Or delete it?

I'm not sure how you got thrown into this state, but it seems like some sort of filesystem-level issue, not an application-level issue. Hard to debug remotely.

If you run out of options, I'd suggest considering the "repair" option again. I'm guessing that it runs fsck in the background.

I can delete this file, I had moved the files to a key in case they need to be restored to repair the drive.

I am lucky enough to still be able to access the files by opening them as explained in a previous post.

I will use the "repair" option as you suggest, but first I will buy a new external storage drive to move the files.

It will not be in the immediate future, I will keep you informed of the outcome of the repair.

Thanks for your help and follow up.

Hello,

I'm coming back to you as promised after transferring the files from the disk to another one I bought recently.

Just like when I chose the "Check file system" option, the operation "repair the file system"only took a second.
It seems that the job doesn't want to be done!
The result displayed is "Repair successful - File system has been repaired" but nothing has changed.
I still have to go up one level in the tree and then open from the right pane of the file explorer to see the contents of the disk.

This external drive is not very old, I have never encountered this problem before, nor with other external drives.
It's not a big deal, since I know how to work around it, but really, this happened just after the backup with Déjà Dup.
Thanks for reading.
