Daily schedule does not run often

Asked by Peter John Allebone

Platform: Ubuntu MATE 20.04 (fresh install, also noticed on a fresh install of 19.04 but I blanked that system and moved to this version assuming it was just an old bug).
Déjà Dup version: 40.5

Setup: Automatic backup, every day, keep for at least a year.
Destination: A plugged in USB disk, automounted in fstab, btrfs filesystem.
Folders to save: Home
Folders to ignore: Trash

Observation:

Often I will open the backup program to check on it and notice it has not run for many days. There is no notification in Ubuntu MATE that there is or was any issue. I can manually run the backup and it works without a problem. Sometimes if I leave it for a while while the program is open, the backup will automatically begin and complete but if I never open the program, a backup never runs. I turn off my pc most days so if there is something supposed to auto start it would be cleared each reboot.

Expectation:

1) If a backup is missed for any reason, I would expect a notification to appear warning me no backup has occurred for more than 1 day (if set to daily). Other scheduling options a warning as appropriate. This does not happen.

2) If set to daily backup, the backup should run daily, without having to manually open the program and check it.

Any advise on why it does not work would be appreciated.
