backup performed then suddenly stopped saving anything

Asked by al espenschied

I've been using backup to weekly save my chosen folders for several years. Then recently backup started to require password verification. I entered password and backup was apparently working except it wasn't. Every time I run it, the message comes up, "backing up for the first time, this may take a while". I checked my backups folder after yesterdays backup: There was no backups at all in it, even my old backups were gone. It acts like it's working, but it isn't. To test my backup location which is an expansion drive connected by USB 3.0, I moved a large folder over to it successfully. So I'm wondering what may have happened to my installation (maybe an update?) and what to do to repair it.

As I troubleshoot the problem, I downloaded and installed LuckyBackup. I tried to save my usual folders with it and found it too was performing as if it were functioning, but failed to write to my destination drive. As I browsed and rechecked the settings of LuckyBackup, I discovered one setting located at : Modify>advanced>command options tab. I found a list of checkboxes one of which was titled, "destination drive is FAT/NFTS". I checked the box and tried to save the folders again. Eurika, it worked! So not being proficient with commands in terminal, I decided to stay with LuckyBackup as it has a comprehensive GUI that can be inspected with a mouse.
