New UUID prevents backup

Asked by Joe

Deja Dup in Ubuntu 14.04:

I was using a 16GB Lexar S50 flash drive for back ups with no problem. Back up size had increased beyond the drives capacity, so I bought a new 32GB Lexar S50 flash drive, same exact model; but higher capacity.

When attempting to back up I get the message:

"Waiting for Lexar to become available"

Drive is not recognized by back up, but is in side bar, so it does mount.

Reformatted drive to "W95 FAT32 LBA" (same format as old drive) using "Disks" in Ubuntu.
Same result.

Installed GParted and formatted to "FAT32".
Same problem.

Unmounted/remounted drive several times.
Same problem.

As far as I have been able to learn, when using any new drive, the UUID will differ from the prior drive. Additionally, when reformatting a drive using Disks, GParted, etc, a new, random, UUID is generated.

My old drives UUID is 3993-2736 and the new drives is 8F4B-97E0.

After much research and posting to the Ubuntu Forums, I believe the root problem is that, once back up is initially set up in DD in Ubuntu, DD looks for the same, identical UUID for each subsequent back up.

Trying to back up with a new drive, the new drive will mount, but DD won't "see" it if the current drives UUID does not match the initial drives UUID.

Questions:

1) Am I correct concerning UUIDs in general?

2) Is this why I cannot initiate a back up?

3) Can/how do I change the UUID in DD to the UUID of my new flash drive?

4) If I am wrong about the root problem, then what could the problem be?

Thanks in advance.

Went digging around in DD and found "Storage location", dropped down and saw "32 GB Volume" as an option. Selected it, started a backup and - success!

There was my new flash drive. Sorry I started this thread when the solution was right in front of me.

Maybe others will find this helpful.

Read well and profit by its lesson.
