I think I blew it...please help

I installed Ubuntu to correct an error I was getting accessing my hard drive with Windows. I meant to install Ubuntu next to windows so I could access my old files and transfer them to a new computer. I think I actually deleted them. Is there a way to restore them? I lost lots and lots and lots of stuff - music, pictures, etc
