Unable to restore the files on windows 7 after backing up on Ubuntu using deja dup

Asked by Thirumaran. N

Hi,
I used deja dup on Ubuntu to back up my files in laptop to an external hard drive. For some reason, I had to remove Ubuntu, format my laptop and install Windows 7. Now, I'm not able to restore the backup files from the external hard drive and put them back in the laptop. I couldn't select the backup folder or files using the restore wizard available on Windows 7.

Also, I installed "Backup4allPro4" wizard trial version and attempted restoring the files from the external hard drive. But, the wizard does not identify the file format backed by deja dup. I made similar attempt using "EaseUsTodoBackup" trail version, but it couldn't recognize the back up file format too.

I found in another forum that deja dup works only on linux/ubuntu. Can deja dup be installed on windows 7?

If the answer is "no", is there any other equivalent tool for windows 7, which will restore the files backed up by deja dup?

Please let me know, how to restore my files back.

Duplicity uses gpg to encrypt the backups, and tar to compress the files. So, you'd probably want to get decrypt the files using gpg and then untar them.

Here's something that may help you: https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/DejaDup/Help/Restore/WorstCase

Hi Zhongfu,
Thank you for your response. I didn't use the option to encrypt the files while backing up using deja dup.
The files have the format like "duplicity-full.20130808T035307Z.vol1.difftar.gz".

As I mentioned earlier, I had to remove Ubuntu and install windows 7 on my lap top. i.e., I have only Windows 7 currently.
So, I can't run any Linux commands and restore my files.

Is there any way to restore my files using any software that runs on Windows 7?

Hmm, in this case, you can just ungzip it then untar it, and use rdiff somehow to patch it all up together... Alternatively, you can boot up a Ubuntu LiveCD, install it with wubi (i.e. on your Windows 7 partition) or set up cygwin to do that.

Thank you Zhongfu. I'll install wubi (desktop version of ubuntu) as you suggested and try to restore my files.

Thanks,

Phew, why make it so complicated.
Instead of using Deja Dup just copy the directory to an external hard drive and then copy the directory from the external hard drive to the Windows PC.
Unless the Deja Dup programmers can get Deja Dup to restore files to Windows PCs using a GUI, then why bother with Deja Dup. All you do is make it very hard for yourself.
