Recursively restore only certain files

Asked by Duncan de Wet

I accidentally deleted some, but not all files in my home directory. I don't know which, but I know I did, and I can find some examples of missing files / folders, including most of my photos.

My Deja Dup backup is about a month old so I can't simply revert to how my home folder was, but I do want to put back into my home directory files that are in the backup but not the home directory. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.

Suppose, hypothetically, that my home directory looked like this (indents represent files in subdirectories)

dir1
           sub1
dir2

And previously:

dir1
           sub1
           gone2.txt
dir2
gone.txt

So I want to restore gone.txt and gone2.txt to their respective places. I go into my home directory and click File -> Restore Missing Files. It comes up with gone.txt, but not gone2.txt. From what I can tell, it does not search for missing files recursively.

Now I can enter dir1 and it recognizes gone2.txt as missing, so the files are there, but I don't have time to go into every directory and subdirectory in my entire home folder.

I do want to get to choose which files to restore (as you can do in the File -> Restore Missing Files window), because there would also be files I deliberately deleted. If I can go through a list of missing files and tick the ones I want to restore that would be perfect.

TL;DR: How can I search **recursively** for missing files and choose which ones to restore?

Thanks,
Duncan

The scenario Duncan described would justify a recursive restore-missing function. Would the underlying duplicity program be a better place to ask for such an enhancement?
