Finding Deja Dup under Gnome

Asked by Craig Smilovitz

I have ubuntu with the Gnome (ie older, non-Unity) desktop. Deja-dup appears to run in the background. But I need to find and customize it. Documentation I've seen says that it is under Applications/System Tools, but it's not there or on any other menus on my system.

I just used Synaptic to completely uninstall and then install it, but that didn't change anything.

So how do I bring up the graphic interface? Is there something I can run from the command line?

And how do I get it onto the Applications pull down menu?

Thanks,

Craig

If in Ubuntu 11.10 or later, it will be in the System Settings dialog. Otherwise it should be in the global preferences menu.

But there is something you can run from the command line if you still can't find it. Run 'deja-dup-preferences'

Thanks,

I ran deja-dup-preferences and changed the list of folders to backup. But I'm still befuddled. I need to fully understand deja-dup or else it's useless. As things stand now, say I lose my drives and my data. Then I reinstall a new ubuntu on a new drive. Then what? I still have no idea how to get to an interface that would allow me to restore!

As to your other methods. "System settings dialog": I don't see that on the Application or Places menus. On a command line I run "SystemSettings". That brings up a window with 13 icons, none of which seems to have anything to do with backup or deja-dup (they are: Acct Details, Appli Appear, Appli & System Notif.., File Assns, Locale, Personal Info, Default Appls, Desktop search, Network Settings, SSL Prefs, Removable Devices, Multimedia).

"Global Preference Menu" I also don't see this anywhere. It doesn't seem to be either on the Application or Places menu,

Thanks for your help so far.

Which version of Ubuntu are you running?

version 11.10. I think my lack of access to deja-dup may have to do with
my top-level menus. For many versions of ubuntu, I had three menus
(Applications, Places, System) visible in the desktop top menu bar. For a
while I've only had two (Application, System). Is this normal?

BTW, I mistyped in the previous message. I have two top-level menus, Applications and PLACES, not Application and System.

OK, just booted into a GNOME Classic session in Ubuntu 11.10.

Click on the top-right menu that says your name. Then click "System Settings". A window will come up with various settings panels you can enter. "Backup" will be among them, on the bottom-left.

To answer your question about how to restore, you would do this same thing after reinstalling a fresh Ubuntu. There is a Restore button that lets you point at your data and restore it.
