"Full backup" feature is preventing Deja Dup from doing its job

Asked by Jens Moser

I have my backup schedule set to "daily" and backup using SSH.

Deja Dup has decided it needs to do a full backup of my ~3 GB home folder (it does not give me a choice to continue backing up incrementally instead). The backup would take roughly 12 hours; however, after 10 hours my hosting provider resets the SSH connection and the backup fails. When it is started the next time, it resumes at 0% progress and tries again for 10 hours until failure because of connection reset.

In effect, a feature that is supposed to help increase backup reliability has been preventing me from making any backups at all for over 3 weeks. I hope this can be done better somehow.

Thank you,
JMoser

I bet you're being affected by bug 902985. That bug prevents encrypted backups from being able to be resumed (they just start over at 0% like you say). :-/ It's fixed in trunk and on Ubuntu 12.04.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I'm running Fedora 16. Any chance of fixing the bug without installing unstable software?

The best workaround for now is to not encrypt the backup when you create it.

Unfortunately, not encrypting is not an option for me.

Thank you anyway, it is good to see that the community is vibrant enough to provide near-instant response times! I love Deja Dup and will continue to use it.

Can you help with this problem?
