hoplessly confused on this(?) program

Asked by Dave Morse

In my ubuntu system settings, there is an icon called "backup". I think this launches "deja-dup", but I'm not sure, because there's no menu items and in particular no "About" menu item. It doesn't /look/ like deja-dup, there are just four items in a white left pane: Overview, Storage, Folders, Schedule.

I tried this program, and the GUI was nice, but it doesn't read all user's files, just the logged in user's files. So I need to run it as root, I guess, but I can't figure out how to do that. If I just try the command line "sudo deja-dup --backup", it doesn't give me any settings to adjust, it just spins its wheels on a backup with unknown parameters, and takes several minutes to do (apperantly) nothing.

I concur with you giving up. I just looked in here to gauge the level of support for deja-dup. It's not encouraging, is it? In fact a bit like the quality of the help information with the product: content-free.

Bah! Humbug!

Heyo. Deja Dup ("Backup") is designed for just a single user's data. You can backup other users' data, but you need read access to it.
