Cannot read manifest, permission denied

Asked by lorien_the_first_one

I'm new to DejaDup. I set up a backup last week only to find that it has been running backups to a point where it could not create a directory, permission denied. So I checked on the directory and found that it was still owned by my user account. Thinking that DD runs as root, I changed all the permissions as root, "chown -R root:root <directory>" and it ran for a short time and then stopped. The error message was:

Permission denied when trying to read ‘/media/ububackup/DejDup/duplicity-full.20110828T155215Z.manifest’.

This after setting ownership of all files recursively for target backup directory and it's contents. Not sure what to do beyond this point.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Deja Dup does not run as root, so having all the files owned by root is why you got the second error. Try putting all the files back to being owned by your user.

The first error is the interesting one. Can you reproduce it and file a bug? The bug form will tell you how to generate a log file so I can see what's going on.

Well...Just changing the permissions back fixed it.

That was it. I couldn't reproduce the error after that.

I think this is going to work out well. I do have another question, though.
I was using Simple Backup before and noticed that I couldn't restore from
the archive to a new machine. Can you point me in the right direction for
how to restore files to a new machine with Deja Dup? That would be very
helpful as I'm still shopping for a permanent home in Linux. I've been using
Fedora and it's very nice, but I am planning on moving back to Ubuntu as
soon as they get Gnome 3 squared away on 11.10.

BTW, I've been experimenting a lot with Linux and I was wondering how I can
contribute to your project as a user. From time to time, I like to try a new
distro on my laptop and I'd be happy to experiment with DejaDup on my "test
rig" and report any problems I might find.

Thanks for the quick response.

There are full-restore instructions in the help documentation for Deja Dup (Help->Contents) when you're running it. Or here: http://live.gnome.org/DejaDup/Help/Restore/Full

As for contributing, I love help! :) Here are some ideas: http://live.gnome.org/DejaDup/GettingInvolved

If you find bugs when testing DD out on different distros, please file a bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/deja-dup/+filebug

Can you help with this problem?
