Still Unable to connect to External H.D.D.

Asked by Geoff Smith

Further to my question 12 hours ago No. 167661 - I still can not get connection to External H.D.D. which does not appear in drop down menu. I thought I was connecting correctly to "Dev" but found this was not so - error message -
Appears that "Dev" I selected was not correct address. "BackendException: Could not copy /tmp/duplicity-YmKmkN-tempdir/mktemp-c3fcEX-2 to /dev/duplicity-full.20110812T022446Z.vol1.difftar.gpg"

I have just realized that H.D.D. is not formatted. Should I do that with Gparted with ext4 as option? Will that be the source of my problem?

I formatted (ext4) with the Label "Backup". I thought that I selected Backup O.K. but when I tried backup - failed after about 10 seconds with error message -
BackendException: Could not copy /tmp/duplicity-WV4CRw-tempdir/mktemp-3FVzfn-2 to /media/Backup/duplicity-full.20110812T071917Z.vol1.difftar.gpg

Don't know what to do now.

Thank you.

Is it possible to get a later version of Deja Dup ?

You can't get a newer Deja Dup on Ubuntu 10.04. You'd have to upgrade your Ubuntu to get a newer one.

So one problem with the older Deja Dups is that they weren't especially clear on errors all the time (a constant battle). This one I'm guessing is actually a permission error.

Can you as a user navigate to the external drive in your File Manager? And then create a folder in it by right clicking? If you can't, Deja Dup can't write files there either.

I might suggest formatting your drive as FAT instead of ext4. It doesn't keep track of permissions like ext4 does.

Hi Michael - thanks for the time you have spent on me,

I reformatted to FAT and created a file inside "Backup" and as a result backup worked - Thank you.
I do not have much on my computer, only 22 items were saved totalling 697 MB.

However I have a misconception it appears about what backup consists of - I have 4 users set up - Are files for all 4 saved? I also had the idea that my browser addresses for the 4 users would be backed up also. Can I now assume this isn't so? Is another form of Backup needed to achieve this?

Anyway Michael, thanks very much for your help.

Kind regards.

No, only your files are backed up by default. You will need to add other users' home folders to your include list to back them up. Just add them to your list and back up again. They will be added to the existing backup.

For any user that is backed up (assuming you didn't manually exclude the browser config directory which is unlikely), your browser settings will be backed up too.
