Use Deja-Dup on several computers

Asked by El hombre del gorrocóptero

Hello, I'm sending this because I didn't see a suggestions page or something. I work with two computers, a PC and a netbook, and I store the backups in a 60gb external hard drive, which is normally connected to the PC. I work normally with the PC, but when I go to a meeting or a presentation I use to copy the main data into the laptop usin a pendrive. So I always have three copies of the data for security: PC, netbook and the external hard drive.

I tried to do the same operation using the external hard drive: store a backup, made by Deja-Dup, into the laptop. The program didn't detect any backup. I don't know if it is because Deja-Dup also stores the hostname (I did the trick with backintime modifying the backup's hostname), but I wonder if I could do this with Deja-Dup. Is it possible?

Thank you!

I actually don't have much experience with moving backups. I know that the hostname is stored in the duplicity-*.manifest files. Maybe you need to edit those?

Though, if I'm reading you right, it sounds like you are really trying to synchronize data rather than make a redundant disaster back up? Perhaps an app designed for synchronization might fit better?

Thanks for replying. I edited the hostname, but the files are signed and changing the hostname is worthless. The idea is to centralise the backup files and recover the backup from another computer. You might be right and an application for synchronization is what I need, but I'd lose the ability to recover a specific copy as far as I known (the one I did yesterday or a week ago).

I think I could do the trick using a synchronization app + deja-dup in each computer to keep the files synchronized while I still can recover a specific copy.
