If Deja Dup compresses my files...

This is probably the most idiotic question on the planet...but I'm concerned about using Deja Dup;

Before I actually started looking at these types of programs I was backing up my personal files by hand. So my real worry is when I go to my backup hard-drive and see loads of .gz files deja dup has put in there; how will I recover the data without Deja Dup as easily as I stored it?

More importantly, is Deja Dup compressing my files? (I've got quite a few bits of media that I don't want compressed)

What do I do if Deja Dup, upon being given the order to restore the files; can't?

And lastly; can I trust Deja Dup? :P

Well, I wouldn't trust deja-dup with nuclear secrets, but I do use it as my only backup solution.

To answer the compression question: Yes, it compresses using gzip. No way to not compress your media (why would you care if it tries to compress it -- I mean, it won't be efficient, but doesn't hurt).

In order to get files back, you will need to use either deja-dup or duplicity (the underlying backup tool). So you do have one layer of safety in that if deja-dup dies, duplicity might work. Duplicity does occasionally have bugs. But plenty of people use it.

I care about compression because I've had nasty accidents with, say, compressing HD video files, they turn out like garbage afterwards. Hence my worry, mainly.
