partial restore (e. g. single file or subfolder)

In order to restore a single file or a smallish subfolder out of a 20 GiB online backup archive, how to proceed without restoring the entire 20 GiB (be it in-place or elsewhere)? Does one have to sort back to a lengthy duplicity commandline each time such a common task arises?
