D-d trying to copy files in /tmp which should be excluded

Asked by Sandra Pakin

Using U 10.04 & d-d 14.0.3 to backup to an external hd. Getting BackendException: Could not copy /tmp/duplicity-FeHOfx-tempdir/mktemp-anogE-2 to /media/X2-Ubuntu/DejaBkup/duplicity-ful.20100508T203637Z.vol1.difftar.gz --

I thought /tmp was automatically excluded. I tried explicitly excluding it and received the same mesage.

(When you answer, please be aware that I am a novice.) Thanks.

Good question. You are correct that Deja Dup excludes /tmp, but Deja Dup also secretly uses /tmp as a holding place for the backup files it generates. That's why you're seeing those filenames.

As for why you are getting that error, let's see if we can figure it out. Can you create files on the drive normally? Like, go to Places->X2 Ubuntu, right click, and Create Folder. If you can't create a folder, that could be your issue. If so, maybe you don't have the right permissions for the drive?

Otherwise, maybe you've run out of space? How big is the free space on it?

Those errors *should* be separate, nice, user-friendly errors, but right now, they are both ugly 'couldn't copy' errors. :( I'm guessing that one of them is your issue. If not... file a bug and provide the info the bug form asks for.

Yes, permissions were the problem. After I fixed those, Deja Dup backed up as expected. Thanks for the quick reply and your help. Perhaps you could update the documentation to remind newbies like myself to be sure that their target drive/directory has the proper permissions.

Great, closing this question then. I agree the error should be nicer.
