I wondered if an empty file would suffice, and created a file in .cache/deja-dup/. I started deja-dup from the windowskey launcher. It asked if I wanted a password on the backups, then started to create "first backup". I checked the folder, and discovered that it had removed all previous backups. In .cache, it converted by empty file to a folder with a single file in it, README:
This folder can be safely deleted.

It's working on the backup now. If it fails, I'll change this.
