su error

I installed linux from the knoppix 5.1 disk. Now every time I click on a menu item that needs root
permissions it puts up a box that says " Su returned with an error ". I can become a super user from the terminal.

You say that you installed Linux from a Knoppix disk and not from Ubuntu? If that's the case this may not be the best place to find the answer to your question. Personally I would recommend that you try going to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and either download or request a free copy of Ubuntu 6.10, and give it another shot.

Perhaps installing Debian 4.0 would be better for you - if you are intent on using Debian

maybe you forget to mount root partition in Ubuntu system.
please use Ubuntu
