DDRescue-GUI as an AppImage

Asked by Francisco Tome

Hi,

I have been migrating many of my regular software to AppImage. This allows me to easely backup my favorite programs, and also facilitates when I am distro hopping :)

Is it in your plans to distribute DDRescue-GUI and all it's dependencies as an AppImage file? For me and many others AppImage is an amasing form of software release, as it frees the end user of almost any issues with installation or compatibility, and many distros support AppImage out of the box.

Tell me your thoughts on this, please.

Thank you very much, keep up your amazing work.

Hi Francisco,

This is a really good idea! I know a lot of people who love AppImage, myself included, so I'll see what I can do for you in the next release :)

I'm glad you find this a useful program, and thanks for planting the seed for this. Any other features/extras you might want?

Hamish

Hello Hamish!

Firstly I just want to thank you for ddrescue-gui and your ongoing support and documentation of it (so few developers _document_ their projects particularly well!).

I was just curious if you'd made any progress or decisions about ddrescue-gui as an appimage. It's been quite a while on this thread, but I just went to flathub.org and I couldn't find ddrescue-gui, or anything with ddrescue in the name. Is it called something else there?

I notice it's also not in your PPA, so it'd be great if it were maintained _somewhere_ linux users could access it as part of a managed package system and not have to constantly remember to check for updates for it, or go the dubious route of allowing it to update _itself_, as is commonplace on certain other unmentionable OSes.

Thank you very much for your time,

Azr

Hi there,

I still plan to release an AppImage version, but there has been a lot of disruption in my life and unfortunately I haven't gotten to doing it yet. In the near future, there should hopefully be an AppImage version.

I could also mention the PPA more prominently, but the introduction of an AppImage version will probably come at the cost of individual versions for different distributions - but we'll see.

Hope this helps,
Hamish
