read error: No data recovered.

Asked by garden city

Hi Hamish,

I have 1TB Segate free agent external hard disk with only one partition. All of sudden it started showing raw and not shown in my computer but shows in device manger, raw disk in disk manger. I was going through the details of DDRescue-GUI and felt happy that i can recover all my data. So
1. I followed your you tube "Tutorial: Running DDRescue-GUI on Windows (initial version)" to install it in windows 10 professional
version 1909, build:18363.693
2. Started the recovery as per your tutorial. its almost 251 hrs since i started the DDRescue_GUI V2.0.2. I can only see error rate of 16132 B/s and so far no data recovered.

3. The image file is 0 kb and no data written yet
4. log file not yet written yet

Appreciate your help and guidance to recover the data

Kind Regards,

Hello,

That's unfortunate. Is there an access light on the drive/can you hear it whirring and trying to read data?

Could you also tell me what settings you used please?

Sometimes external drives give up after only a few read errors, so it might be worth trying to remove the drive and plug it directly into a SATA port, as long as it isn't one of the self-encrypting kinds. What model is it?

Hello Hamish,

Thank you for the response.
The access light was on and i was able to feel the drive access when i touched it without any crackling noise. infarct it showed up in "this PC" of my laptop prior to using DDRescue-Gui but when i tried to open in explorer it showed me error saying "not able to read sector 0" so i started to explore on tools to recover data and lucky to find DDRescue-gui.

I was using a default settings as per your tutorial the only difference was that i was storing the image in external WD 4TB USB connected drive due to space constraint in laptop. Later the DDRescure-gui shout down by itself for unknown reasons while it was doing pass-5.

The model is :Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive ST310005FDA2E1-RK (Silver)
its not self encryption but i don't know how to connect directly in to SATA port as it has only USB2 port.

Please help. thank you

Hello,

Okay, good to know that the access light is on and it's making noise. Does it feel hot? If it does, it might be worth directing a fan at it or something like that - when they start to get hot they sometimes stop working.

What error did you get when DDRescue-GUI shut down? Also, could you see anything of note in the terminal output?

You would need to disassemble the drive in order to connect it directly to a SATA port. However, the version of DDRescue-GUI I have out for Windows has a number of bugs that I'm currently unable to fix. Would it be possible for you to use a Linux machine or a live disk like Parted Magic (www.partedmagic.com) to continue the recovery, just in case this is a Windows-related problem?

Hello Hamish,

thank you for the response.
It was not making any noise, it was not hot as i already directed the fan based on your suggestion in other post. it didn't show me any error rather it disappeared itself. For some reason no log file written nor image file. I will try with linux, please let me know if you have any tutorial on howto install linux in USB and setup and run DDRescue Gui in linux.

Thank you

Hello,

Oops, I misread. Give it a try on Linux, but if still no luck you may need to take the enclosure apart so you can connect it directly to a SATA port. Strange for it to just give up and crash.

There are some Parted Magic tutorials at https://partedmagic.com/videos/ . Parted Magic comes with DDRescue-GUI, and costs $11 at the time or writing. You can make an Ubuntu live USB and add DDRescue-GUI to it for free, but using Parted Magic is less hassle and has other useful tools.

Hope this helps,

Hamish
