How long should a search take (approx)?

Approximately how long should I leave a search running? Does it matter if it just keeps running (say, if I forget to close the window)?

Depending on what hub, both big or small, that you are accessing as in time search intervals, long or short. Also, if you have Break 1st ADLSearch match enabled on File\Settings\Advanced, information may that be Filename, Directory and/or Full Path narrows down the search specifically & makes item a little easier to look for.

You can run it anytime long since the search query is issued only once and then the window is just collecting responses. To read more about searches in DC press F1 (Help) on the search window.
