Port forwarding

I'm running DC on Passive mode, I would like to use port forwarding to get full use from DC. Can anyone guide me on how to setup port forwarding using a Netgear DG834GT router. I understand the port addresses have to be the same on DC and the router, but how do you decide what port number to use and how many digits to use for the port number.
Can someone help me?

You take a random port number and you try it. If it doesn;t work , try another ( might be used for another purpose ).
Any number from 1024 to 65000 should be ok.
