Finished files in UNFINISHED directory

Asked by Guset

My DC++ was working fine for months until it crashed 3 days ago (only DC++, not Windows). After the crash when i first ran DC++ it was asking me again for my settings and everything was blank. It seems that the crash deleted or corrupted the settings, so i copied my settings xml file from the BackUp folder back to the DC++ folder and re-ran it. Now everything seemed to be back, even my queues and everything. One thing i noticed though when i went to the unfinished directory, it was full of both finished AND unfinished files! The FINISHED directory only contained finished files like it should, the UNFINISHED contained both kind of files! dctmp and properly finished AVI's and ISO which ran fine, hence they were finished properly with no errors. Why were they not moved to the FINISHED directory like the rest of my files? Compared to the FINISHED directory files they were a lot less, but still quite a few downloads that i thought never finished. Very weird.

Unfortunately i did not check the UNFINISHED directory before the crash, so i can't tell if this happened before or after the crash.

DC++ v0.707 stable
WinXP SP3

Because (as you described in the other question of yours) you set the file destination to your unfinished directory by misuse of Download to..

Although you correctly answered my other question, i think you are wrong about this one. I did not do anything different to any of my files and i used in ALL the DOWNLOAD TO feature. Hence if i was doing it wrong, ALL my files should end up in the UNFINISHED directory. But it is only a small fraction 5% of the total downloads. The rest are correctly placed in the FINISHED directory. The files that i found in the UNFINISHED directory were complete and never moved to the FINISHED. In the UNFINISHED there should only be DCTMP files and not MPG, EXE and ISOs. Do you think the Queue.xml corruption could cause that? I said earlier that DC++ one day crashed and all my settings (including download directories) were gone and i had to re-enter them. Also my Queue.xml had vanished from the DC++ install directory, so i copied an earlier backup and voila most of the current downloads were back!

Yes, there are other possible cases when the temp file stuck in the unifinished folder, I'll make a faq for this topic, since then if you read the help how downloads work in DC++ you can imagine what more can happen (disk full, etc...)

Yes, i have been careful enough and have not experienced a disk full or anything similar. Thanks for the prompt response. At the end of the day it might have been the crash that caused all of this. I will probably make an automated backup of all the XML files from the DC++ directory every 2 or 3 days somewhere, so in case it crashes again, a simple copy and paste should fix everything or most of the faults.
Many thanks mate! And sorry for the previous mixup, too much on my mind!

eMTee suggests this article as an answer to your question:
FAQ #277: “I found my finished download stayed in the Unfinished folder with .dctmp extension. If I rename it to the original name and open it looks OK. How come?”.
