I keep getting this message "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" but the files are fine when i access them on my computer. what's going on?

Asked by y_z

DC++ kind of chooses what it wants to share from my share files and i keep getting the error message "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". I have windows vista and I've tried uninstalling DC++ and reinstalling but nothing really changes.
I'm terrible with computers and i have no idea what to do. (ie: an idiot's guide to fixing this problem would be best)

Where do you get that message ? When downloading ? in the DC++ downloads/uploads frame under your specific download ?

What version of DC++ are you using?

Is this the message on your screen while your files are hashing that's on your System Log: calculated CRC32 does not match the one found in SFV file.?

i'm using the newest version of dc++ but this happens with the older versions that i've found

this is the whole message (the locations and the names vary): Error hashing file location\ file name: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

this is a message coming straight from your disk drive, indicating that the files you are trying to hash may well be corrupted. this could be quite serious and i would suggest backing important work up just in case the disk were in a bad shape and close to death. DC++ catches this message while hashing, but most likely other applications will have trouble reading these files too when they try to.

as a start, try to run standard disk checking tools from Windows (right-click on the drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking).
