pcAnywhere and DC++ Issue

Asked by Fred Smith

I have DC++ installed on my host computer [desktop] with XP Home Edition SP2. I have pcAnywhere [pca] as a host on my desktop. I use my remote computer [laptop] running Vista Home Premium SP1 with pca to establish a remote session with my desktop.

If DC++ is not running, I can always connect using pca with no problem. When DC++ is running [which is almost all the time], I can only connect if I DC++ is only connected to a few hubs and/or allowing only a few uploads at the same time.

The web remote version of pca seems to be able to connect even when the pca program can not, which is very odd.

Any insight here?

Thanks,

Fred

Probably because of the uploads you don't have enough upload bandwidth for pca while you running DC++. You'd better to use some bandwith limiting software on your host or one of the DC++ mods which has bult-in bandwidth limiting function.

I have Comcast cable internet. When I do a Speakeasy speed test, I regulary test at 2651 kbps (331.4 KB/sec transfer rate). It does not seem like the combined uploads I am allowing come close to this. Although, your point about upload bandwidth makes sense.

Any ideas on a bandwidth limiter so I can test this?

Thanks,
Fred

There are free and non-free bandwith limiter programs, the free ones such as NetLimiter are usually not in top quality, I can recommend DU Supercontroller for XP (not free).
Again you'd better to try one of the DC++ mods which has bult-in bandwidth limiting function such as StrongDC++.

Thanks again eMTee,
Do you think a program like DU Supercontoler will allow me to give bandwidth priority to pcAnywhere? What I want to is give pcanywhere top priority so when I attempt a remote session DC++ bandwidth priority will be lowered, allowing pcanywhere whatever bandwidth it needs. I only want to lower DC++ bandwidth when I am establishing a remote session with pcanywhere.

No you can't. You can define speed limits in KiB/s per application.

Can you help with this problem?
