how to use private message and chat

Asked by Joegs

I'm a first time user of any p2p program but the only thing I'm having difficulty is sending and answering messages on a hub. I have received a message and tried to send one by right clicking on another users name and selecting private chat. In both cases a message screen opens with a blinking cursor - and I cannot use the keyboard to type a reply or a new message. I don't see anything in the standard instructions as to how to go about this. Thank you for hopefully walking me through what I presume is a simple process that is eluding me.

Well, there's not much about it, click to the input box where the cursor blinks, type your message and press Enter. Some hubs might actually block sending private messages for certain group of users so you'd better try this in more hubs.

If it doesn't work then you might face a bug in the software in which case we want to know more about your environment and what version of DC++ you're using, etc...

Yes, that's exactly what I've been doing and just tried again - and I can't enter anything in the message window. I just dl'd this from your site less than a week ago. It's v0.851.

And I know the hub doesn't block because I was invited on it by a friend who sent me my first message I couldn't reply to. And a day or so later one of the moderators sent me a welcome message which I also couldn't reply to. My friend is the one who suggested DC++ and he obviously is not having this problem and can't explain why I am.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

You're trying to type into the message input box in the bottom, not to the messages window, right?

Oops. Well, I did day "something simple" was eluding me - and that was it. Never used a peer to peer sharing client with chat before - just old style ftp - and when I saw the blinking cursor in the window I thought that was the place. And when it wasn't I directed my attention up the page to the command bar and menu - never even looked twice at what turns out to be the place I was supposed to be typing. Thank you.
