DC++

Download and connection problems

I am new to DC++ and have installed the version my brother gave me, I have Windows 7. I can see hublists and add hubs to favourites but everytime I click on a user it tries to connect then stops and says connection timeout then switches back to connecting, down the bottom it comes up with "Error registering Magnet link handler" then after a while the user disappears from the queue. I am connected to the internet by a network cable and Auckland University...I dont know my upload speed and whether or not I have a firewall so I put my connection as Direct Connection. I also cant search for any files.
