Can't search for files

Asked by ensabahnur

OK, I'm a long time user of DC++

I never had any problems until I got a new computer (and Windows 7).

I had trouble logging in, but dealt with the whole Magnet thing.

Now, when I'm logged into a hub, I can't search for files or download someone's list.

It says that it's searching, but nothing happens no matter how long I wait. The same with trying to download someone's list. It says it's connecting but it never does.

I have a direct connection and have told Windows Firewall to allow DC++ to work...so I'm at a loss.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Are you using the latest version of DC++? If you are, here's the answer to your question.

I've just upgraded to the newest version of DC++. Now I can't connect / search / download. What happened? https://answers.launchpad.net/dcplusplus/+faq/83

Hm, none of that seemed to help I'm afraid.

I can verify the version number and I can find hubs...I can even enter the hubs but I can't search or download someone's list.

I took a couple of screen caps in the hope that they might help see where I'm going wrong:

I must concur with ensabahnur. I've been using Windows 7 Ultimate for quite some time. I installed the 0.75 initially and everything was working fine. After about 10-14 days, I could no longer get file lists and download files. I have a router and I was very careful to follow the instructions regarding port forwarding and my external IP address, etc. Nevertheless, I can connect to a hub without a single problem. I can see the other users in the hub just fine. Yet, I cannot get file lists or download files. I switched to passive mode for a while, however, that is extremely slower than active. I also tried changing ports - thinking that could solve the problem. NO JOY. I love this application and I reached this forum site because I was actually trying to see if perhaps there was a newer version out that I hadn't noticed.

I hope an answer comes soon. I miss my DC++. Thanks in advance for all the work that you all do to make this a wonderful application.

You need to open and/or forward your ports by going to http://www.portforward.com to find out the brand of router that you are using. Also, google UPnPTest.Exe to test the 8 steps to pass.

Thank you Twilight, but I now have 2 questions:

First, this is where my lack of computer knowledge comes in. My computer is directly wired to the internet, so I'm not sure if my Motorolla SURFboard Cable Modem is what I need for that site or if my Linksys Wireless (which is for the rest of the household) is what I need.

Second, I tried the UPnP test and I failed tests 3 and 5. I clicked the link to try and fix it myself, but the page won't load.

Thanks for the help

In order for Number 3 & 5 to pass, click the Windows icon on the bottom of your left screen, on Start Search, type Service.msc & hit Enter on keyboard.

Scroll down & look for:
3. SSDP Discovery should be set to Automatic under Startup Type, hit the Apply button and close the Dialogue box by clicking OK.
5. UPnPHost Device Host should be set to Automatic under Startup Type, hit the Apply button and close the Dialogue box by clicking OK.

http://img297.imageshack.us/i/firewall.jpg, on Windows Firewall Settings, make sure the General is Off, Exceptions for DC++ is checkmark, hit Apply & OK. Make sure your anti-virus is enabled so you are not vulnerable to hackers, malicious software, viruses & create an allow rule for DC++ since you are on Windows 7.

http://img689.imageshack.us/i/connectionn.jpg to find out your IP address, go to http://www.canyouseeme.org & enter any port number. DC++ TCP/UDP default port number is 1412 but you can also use these numbers from 1024 through 65536. While DC++ TLS/TCP port number should be various & between 1024 through 32768. Here's an example, DC++ TCP/UDP is both default port number 1412 while TLS/TCP is 19200. Just an idea, you can use any number on the previous sentence.

On the Advance, the options are your choices. In order for these to take effect, you have to close DC++ & reopen it again.

Active mode on Windows 7 has the same configuration as Vista.

Alright, now test 3 & 5 say I passed, thanks!

As to the Firewall, I'm not sure what you mean by the "general being off".

I checked off both boxes for DC++ so I'm not sure what else to do there.

As to the IP address bit, I found it by clicking that website, but when I entered "1412" as my port, it said that it could not see my service.

Appreciate the help though

I'm referring to Control Panel, when you change Settings on Windows Firewall, do you see General On & Off?

OK, here is what I see when I open the Control Panel: http://img35.imageshack.us/i/controlpanelb.jpg/

This is what I see when I click on the Firewall Status: http://img89.imageshack.us/i/firewall2t.jpg/

And from above, these are the programs on the allow list or whatever with the Firewall: http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/4547/firewall.jpg

On the Home or Work (Private) Networks, Windows Firewall state should be Off not On. Make sure your anti-virus is enabled so you are not vulnerable to hackers, malicious software, viruses & create an allow rule for DC++ since you are on Windows 7.

As to the IP address, go to http://www.dslreports.com/ip. The IP that just fetched this page is on your screen. Highlight & put the IP on External / WAN IP on your DC++ connection settings.

http://www.canyouseeme.org will display your IP, but you have to configure your router in order to see Success rather than Error.

Do you have all 6 of 8 passed when you test UPNPTest? If so, you have 7 & 8 failed then. You need port forwarding by going to http://www.portforward.com. On PortForward's page, look for the make & model of your router. Here's an example, 2Wire (Make) 2701 HG-B (Model). To find out your router, look for the make & model if your modem is near or next to your PC.

All you need is the model for Linksys & Motorola since they are both listed on PortForward's page.

Ohhhh, I can't have Windows Firewall up at all?

OK, in that case I'll have to update my anti-virus stuff and get back to this in a day or so.

OK, thanks Twilight, I'll update this when I do all that :)

I've passed all the tests on the UPNP Test though.

"Ohhhh, I can't have Windows Firewall up at all?" Turn Off Windows Firewall instead of on. Make sure your anti-virus is enabled so you are not vulnerable to hackers, malicious software, viruses & create an allow rule for DC++ since you are on Windows 7.

Since you have all 8 UPnP test passed, when you logged into a hub, are you able to pull a user's filelist & search results popping out of the search engine of your screen? If that's the case, I guess this matter is close.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you here. I turned off the Firewall and have my anti-virus up and everything...and I still pass all 8 tests, but I still can't search for files or pull up a user's list.

Try this page to make another re-test: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/using/tools/igd/default.mspx

Go to Control Panel, Network/Sharing Center & turn On Network Discovery.

This is a screen cap from my network sharing area...let me know if I need to change something:

The image that you uploaded is correct, Network Discovery is supposed to be turned On. On DC++ "Connections Settings" do you have External WAN / IP updated? If your IP is dymanic (changing), go to dslreport link on the previous posts above to copy & paste IP to External / WAN IP on DC++ Connection Settings. Also, canyouseeme's page, enter port numbers that you are using & hopefully Success is on your screen rather than Error.

OK, I entered my IP number in the External Wan/IP box, but it still won't work.

Also, how do I determine my port number?

On DC++ Connection Settings, did you enter Port Number for TCP/UDP/TLS?

On PortForward's page, look for the make & model of your router. Here's an example, 2Wire (Make) 2701 HG-B (Model). To find out your router, look for the make & model if your modem is near or next to your PC.

If so, check the configuration of your router's address: http://192.168.x.x
