How do I change the default desktop environment?

I tried changing a xubuntu iso to the cinnamon desktop environment but that did not work it only changed the default background to the debian logo for some reason. How do change the default desktop environment?

The following did not work?

    apt update
    apt install cinnamon

If not, try...

    apt update
    apt install --reinstall --install-suggests cinnamon

...don't forget to select the Cinnamon session on the login screen before logging in!
