Why is patching with ioshybrid necessary?

I always have to patch my generated iso using "isohybrid <ISO_FILE>" to make it boot from my usb stick (I use the Ubuntu start media creator to copy it to usb) or in VirtualBox. Am I doing something wrong? If this is necessary it would be nice to have an option for that in cubic...

If you create a USB using the original unmodified ISO file from Ubuntu, do you have to patch that?

I've now tested with the regular ubuntu-20.04.2.0-desktop-amd64.iso and my own generated, unpatched iso in VirtualBox and a real machine, and both boot without using isohybrid... I'm not sure what happened earlier, but it seems to be working...
