Updating Later Versions than Host OS

Asked by RobertX

If I'm customising a GNU/Linux disto, would it be a good to be running the same version as the OS ISO I'm updating?

It would be good, but not required at all.

The host distro doesn't make a difference, but sometimes the kernel does matter.
Here are a couple of things I've run into, when the host kernel is very different from the custom kernel..

The chroot environment will use the same kernel as your host machine.
But the kernel used by the OS you are customizing may be different.
So this has implications when you install drivers, which are usually setup for the current kernel.
However, after you install your newly customized OS onto a machine, and do an update, everything is usually OK.

Also, there is an issue with DNS look-ups Ubuntu 17.04 --> 17.10.
This has something to do with the file /etc/resolv.conf having been moved.
Nevertheless, there are solutions on the Internet for this, depending on the distro you are running.

Can you help with this problem?
