Linux Mint Compatibility

Asked by RobertX

I just discovered this PPA just now, and I want to test it on the 32-bit version of Linux Mint "Tara," which is the minimal version of Ubuntu's "Bionic Beaver."

Should I take precautions for Linux Mint releases, as Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu? Should I pass? Or should I use Ubuntu ISOs to ensure stability on Custom ISOs?

I've never tested with Linux Mint, and I would be interested to hear about your experience.

If the ISO file structure is similar to other Ubuntu releases, and the ISO has the file "filesystem.squashfs" on it (usually in the "install" or "casper" directory), it ~should~ work. (You can use Archive Manager or similar tool to see if the original Linux Mint ISO has this file.

Some of the pre-populated fields on the the New Project page (like custom Volume ID, Release Name, or Disk Name) may not auto-populate, but you can manually enter whatever values you want.

To save time, first, see if you can actually generate a new ISO using Cubic, so don't bother making any changes in Cubic's chroot terminal environment. If this works, and you can boot into the generated ISO, then you can go back and make changes to your project.

Cubic is easy to remove, if it doesn't work. Simply execute "apt autoremove --puge cubic" to remove it. (You can manually delete your custom project directory to remove any project related files). Cubic does not install any hidden files on your system, so it will be a clean uninstall.

Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon and Xfce custom ISOs can be made with either Ubuntu 18.04 or the same version of Linux Mint. I haven't tried it with other 'host' distros.
