Which package to select for Java use?

Asked by Vivek Panwar

Hello, I wanted to install Oracle Java on my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, for basic program compiling and running. I looked around the internet and pretty complicated solutions came out, which I didn't understood. So I gave it a thought of using Cube-Server for the purpose. So, by the use of latest cube-server vesion, I typed "sun" and the some results came ou.
For information, what I'm actually looking forward to is that, I wanted to compile and run programs of Java. I previously used Windows, and it served my purpose by, the installation of JDK. So we wrote program as .txt file. Put it in a specific location and compile it by the use of Java. So I was thinking Ubuntu served the same purpose.

 So I have few questions.

1. Which package should I select so that my work is done.
2. Will this method work as I am needing it to work?
3. Will it supply it's plugins to Firefox, for online Java Applets, and certain other online Java purposes, or should I download "Icedtead"?

Hello and thank you for asking.

1. Which package should I select so that my work is done.
- You need to download and install 'openjdk-7-jre' for Java

3. Will it supply it's plugins to Firefox, for online Java Applets, and certain other online Java purposes, or should I download "Icedtead"?
- I think you need to download and install 'icedtea-plugin' also, for the java web integration

You can refer to the answers this AskUbuntu thread:

Thank You for your reply.

I also wanted to ask that, if in similar fashion, I wanted to install c++ in 14.04LTS for basic program compiling and running, which package should I select?

Also, will openjdk-7-jre, will serve the purpose for program compiling and running?

Hello again,

For c++, you can use the pre-installed 'g++' in Ubuntu.

Sorry, only the java runtime environment is included in the 'openjdk-7-jre'.
If you want the compiler (javac), you need to install 'openjdk-7-jdk' also.

Thanks for your reply.
Lucky to find out beforehand that I have to download openjdk-7-jdk also.
However, I would like to report a feedback/suggestion.

FEEDBACK :- The "cube-server" works much stable and good in Linux systems, however, it's console(cmd-prompt) crashes and hangs most of the times in Windows PC "No Matter" how good the internet connection or the configuration of system is.
The basic problem is that most of the computers here-around with or without Internet connection uses Windows as OS, whether they are in cyber-cafe or home. So it becomes really difficult to download packages using cube-server.
I also reported it as a bug before.
You can see it here :-
https://bugs.launchpad.net/cube-server/+bug/1535556

Cube-server is a good software for software managent specially for offline-systems.
I am reporting this again because really favour this software and wanted this problem to be solved in a next stable version for Windows.

Thanks camicri-team.

We will soon release a new version of it, and we hope that this release would fix environment problems you are encountering right now.
