Nvidia dashboard with proprietary drivers

Is there a trick to getting the widget for nvidia to work? i have the latest version of mint running with the recommended proprietary drivers and i can see the specs in the Nvidia setting window. but i would prefer to use the conky tools. CPU and other widgets run, but the Nvidia widget does nothing.
