How to set the whole desktop to monochrome (saturation = 0)?

Asked by Martin Hammer

The Opacity, Brightness and Saturation plugin enables control of Saturation. Using this it is possible to turn a window to "monochrome", i.e. with saturation = 0. However, it always works on the active window only. Is there any way to set the saturation for the whole desktop, i.e. all windows (even minimized ones), it the same way that e.g. Negative plugin can do?

Some justification for the question/wish: Negative + Saturation = 0 is pleasant to use in the dark / with tired eyes. Negative on its own can produce a lot of "funky" colour effects.

For the benefit of future readers, I have found the following solution. Enable the Color Filter plugin, one of the predefined filter files is "grayscale". This turns the desktop to monochrome as desired.
