Unity: window maximise during workspace switch

Asked by cighir.victor

1. Go to workspace switcher (Super+S or icon)
2. Take a window that is not maximised (nautilus for example), move it to the of the screen until the orange maximized window hint appears. Let go.
3. Double click somewhere on the maximized window (don't do Super+S)
4. Move the pointer to the left of the screen and orange hint rectangle appears again. This time only on the left of the screen...

I wanted to file a bug but I don't know the right package etc. etc. Someone can confirm?

I'm running Ubuntu 11.10, updated a couple of days ago.

Confirmed on my system, updated only a few minutes ago.

It took me a while to replicate the problem because I wasn't too sure from your description what it was. The left and right hint rectangles are false ones - the window is never going to get snapped either left or right. You also need to emphasis the point that the snap operation _must_ be done on the workspace switcher screen. Snapping the the workspace proper works fine.

From Google searches, it seems the package you want to report this against is compiz, and specifically the plugin for it that gives the edge snap functionality - it is called 'grid'

To make it more confusing it didn't happen everytime, it seemed to depend on what workspace had the focus at the start - if I was originally on the workspace where the minimised app was, the problem didn't seem to occur.

To make matters worse, it was sometimes hard to snap to the correct workspace - sometimes it went left and sometimes it went right. I suspect that snapping to the top (maximise) was never meant to be allowable in the workspace switcher - I think it was only supposed to be possible when one workspace had the whole screen. This could be the source of compis and the grid plugin getting confused.

So disabling snapping while workspace switcher is still on could be a workaround. But I don;t see this itself as a problem. Just that it get's mixed up after workspace switcher ends.

Also if you hit Super+S to finish the switcher, then everything is okay.

Can you help with this problem?
