Filenames that begin with a dot are automatically hidden, so you could rename the file, e.g.:
picture.jpg --> .picture.jpg

If you don't want to rename files, then you could instead create a text file called .hidden in the directory you want to hide files. On each line of that file put the name of a file to hide, e.g.
picture.jpg
report.txt
music.mp3

Both methods work for folder names as well as filenames.

I can't help with PSPP, but it should really be in a separate question anyway.

Can you help with this problem?
