Can't delete synced bookmarks

Asked by Bob Trevithick

Two or more machines have bookmarks synced. We now delete a bookmark from machine A. Machine B still has the bookmark, which gets "merged" back up to the cloud. Go back to machine A and the bookmarks are again merged and the bookmark we tried to delete is back. Similarly, move a bookmark from one location to another, switch machines, and now the bookmark exists in *both* locations. What I now routinely do is delete all bookmarks from the less-often-used machines before starting the browser, and let them pull down the list fresh. Not very convenient. Am I missing something obvious?

Hi Bob,

Do you restart the browser between any of the steps you outline above to "force a sync"? Are you on the Chrome "Dev channel" or BETA channel (what version# shows up in about:version)? We just fixed a bug (http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=31566) that sounds quite similar to what you describe.

Also, how do you "delete all bookmarks ... before restarting the browser"? Do you wipe out the bookmarks.js file from your user data directory? Depending on how (and when, in relation to when you carry out your delete/move scenarios above) you do this, it could end up sending a bunch of changes to the cloud that would conflict with, and possibly override, your delete/move. If you want to delete everything and sync freshly for debugging, I'd recommend going to the options panel and clicking "Stop Syncing this account", followed by clicking "Synchronize my bookmarks" again.

Ahah.. simply updating the other computers to the current daily version fixed this. I had been running the Chromium Daily on my main desktop, and the Google Beta on the other machines. Duh.

Thanks much! Let me know if you would still like answers to the questions you asked? Otherwise, write this one off as "dumb user assumed old version would work the same as new version." :)

Thanks again,
Bob
