ld.so error in recent 64-bit builds

Running chromium-browser from the command line does not start and gives the following error even with the debug option:

:~$ chromium-browser -d
Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-minimal.c: 138: realloc: Assertion `ptr == alloc_last_block' failed!
